David Neeley reported: <<I have an extensive experience with machine
translation (between English and Russian, as it happens). Following the
tenets of simplified English makes this process surprisingly effective,
although I wouldn't recommend it for technical manuals, legal
documents, or anything of critical importance. In my case, it is for
correspondence.>>
Excellent point. I'm told by friends who do translation that one
benefit of simplified English is that it can greatly facilitate machine
translation--specifically, computer-assisted translation rather than
fully automated translation--because the more limited number of
sentence forms that are available makes it easier for the software to
parse the sentence, and thus offers the translator fewer choices (thus
a faster choice) when there are alternative interpretations.
Since I still translate entirely "by hand", I can't confirm this
personally, but it sure sounds reasonable.
