I have always been told, and have always taught that Normal.dot (the global
template) should not be altered. You should always associate your documents
with custom templates that you have created containing the styles
appropriate for your documentation. I have been working with very large and
very complex documents since Word for Windows 1.0, and I have never had
difficulty saving styles or losing styles. I am currently using SP-2 and
have noticed no changes.

Subject: RE: why does Word 2003 drops all my Table styles
Okay, it's time to give voice to the conspiracy nut within me...
I've also had problems with Word and styles in the Normal (global) template.
In short: despite the fact that I have the option checked to Prompt to Save
Normal Template, no style change I've attempted has worked recently. The
Task Pane is set to open when Word opens; not any more, it doesn't (even
though the check box is checked).
Margins, header-footer settings, and section configuration will change when
I click Page Setup|Default, but the warning box to Save to Normal doesn't
appear.
My own conspiracy theory? It seems to me that these things started happening
sometime after I installed SP-2 (yes, I held off for a long, long time).
Whether the culprit is SP-2 or Symantec Norton Internet Security 2005 or any
one or a combination of the additional Windows and Office security patches
issued AFTER SP-2, I don't know. I just know what doesn't work anymore, and
that's very, very frustrating.
