TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I don't understand from the examples you gave that there was anything
that is inconsistent...although I'd quibble with your statement 3,
suggesting the inclusion of "temporary" in front of "increase". The
more complete formulation would seem to be:
"The cardiovascular system responds to exercise with a temporary
increase in heart rate resulting in a higher cardiac output (quantity
of blood pumped through the heart per unit of time) during and
immediately after the exercise. Over time and repeated exercise, the
cardiovascular system responds by increased efficiency through an
increased ejection fraction."
In other words, the more work we give it, the more capably it can
handle that work as it becomes conditioned to it.
That said, the contextual meanings do not seem to be unclear or contradictory.
I would suggest, though, a decent index pointing to each of the shades
of meaning used in the work.
