TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
It was more the inconsistent use of italics and relevent placement of the technical term vs. layman's term or definition that concerns me. The italics didn't show up in the emails so I've marked before and after the word that the author italicized. Hopefully this will make it easier to see:
1. _ Homeostasis_ refers to the body's ability to maintain internal conditions (e.g., temperature, pH, hydration).
2. Heart rate has been recognized as a _vital sign_-an indicator of health disease, excitement, and stress.
3. The cardiovascular system responds to exercise with an increase in heart rate resulting in a higher _cardiac output_ (quantity of blood pumped through the heart per unit of time).
4. Major determinants of blood pressure are heart rate, amount of blood pumped with each beat (_stroke volume_) , and the resistance of the arterial system which is receiving the blood.
They've put the italicized word in a sentence, after an en dash, before the definition in parentheses, and in parentheses after the definition. I'm using Word and they're 24 different documents.
