I believe I have tried this strategy. The issue with this is that I really don't like using Word's drawing tools. They are basically the same as PowerPoint. We have both on our "acceptable applications" list, but I find it hard to do things like extend a line from the center of an elipse, then trim it at the edge of the elipse, or trim off a portion of a circle. Also, I just tried to insert a quick test drawing into FrameMaker to see how it did. I did a very simple drawing with a screen shot, a circle and a lind on top of the bitmap, extending out into white space. I selected the grouped objects then right-clicked my mouse, which gave me an option to "save as picture," which I did, saving it as a .png file (generally a good format for me). When I inserted it into FrameMaker, the white space within the image was black.
