Whenever I ask for software, I get this question. On the whole, it's
frustrating, but ya have to deal with it. IT people are always bombarded
with software requests from a wide variety of people who "just want to
play." So, they become a bit touchy on the subject. Gain their trust,
and this might change.
In my previous company, they made a decision not to order more Sun
workstations because "the company was moving towards Linux." However,
the engineers were *still* making the first release on SPARC Solaris. I
always had to scramble to find available computers! Finally, I found an
older SPARC that someone was discarding. With a lot of work, pleading,
and downright dishonesty I got it set up so I could do testing.
In that same project, I discovered a prevalent attitude that writers
shouldn't need to test the software in order to write about it. This was
installation software for a much larger product. I've found over the
course of my travels that installation is the orphan stepchild of the SW
business.
You could, of course, answer this way: "I need it to complete my plan
for taking over the world!" Try using your most Brain-like voice.
