Contact me offline and I will try to explain how I did just this task in
1986 for a small company that was drafting board oriented and they went to CAD.
At the same time they were acquired by a large firm and we had to COMPLETELY
REVISE the whole structure of the bills of materials (BOMs), the drawing
organization, and the way we managed changes.
It took about 5 weeks to 'catalog' 15,000 parts, BOMs, and CAD file
information. The system we put into place worked for 2 years until the larger
corporation commingled the information.
