Nat Friedman, formerly of the Lin-desktop
initiative said, last year at the Gnome Bangalore
conf, that undercutting MS (or for that matter
any negatively motivated effort) cannot keep the
fire going forever. Sounds sensible to me.
I believe, while I don't argue that the firefox
folks are working out of a basement or under a
street lamp, that the open source community as
such works on the premise that the profit motive
works against intellectual growth because it
stymies collaboration.
Frame works with you to add on features specific
to your organization, this I know from
experience. I haven't worked on rh in years. Note
also that a lot of documents are locked in these
formats.
And the future no doubt belongs to XML sans
tools.
Plain text is king or will be soon.
Getting back to the hacker community, these good
folks want that a hundred rivers (streams of
thought) merge into the ocean of human intellect.
Big words, yes; but such is the ideal. Lest
anyone suspect me of originality (or accuse me of
plagiarism), this is a rough translation of the
sanskrit saying:
aano bhadrah kratavo-yantu viswatah.
Imagine a world where people are spending 10
bucks on creating a product and 100 bucks on
getting a patent on it? This is what a hardcore
hacker is scared of... a world where lawyers are
a scarce commodity!
Thanks and regards,
