Re: Indexing a 212-page tech document using WORD '03
Word would disregard a section
break before the Heading 1 for an index and insert a Continuous Break. We
were constantly having to manually reinsert a section break.
I'm not sure I understand what you mean.
The section break before a Heading 1 for an index has nothing to do with the two section breaks Word inserts as part of the {Index} field. In fact, it has nothing to do with the index at all.
Remember that section breaks control the text that *precedes* them. So the section break before the Heading 1 for the index controls the chapter *before* the index, not the index itself.
text { xe "index entry" }<paragraph marker>
----Section Break (Next Page) controls preceding text----
"Index" (a Heading 1 paragraph)<paragraph marker>
{ INDEX \c 2 \* mergeformat }<paragraph marker>
<end of file, controls text since previous section break>
When you update the index field, this becomes
text { xe "index entry" }<paragraph marker>
----Section Break (Next Page) controls preceding text----
"Index" (a Heading 1 paragraph)<paragraph marker>
----Section Break (Continuous) controls Heading 1 paragraph above----
index entry, nn<paragraph marker>
----Section Break (Continuous) controls body of index----
<paragraph marker>
<end of file, controls paragraph marker above>
By the way, this happens only if you use an index option (like two-column output) that requires the additional section breaks; if not, they aren't added by the {index} field. I forgot to mention this point in earlier messages in this thread.
