This brings up another question about the pronunciation. Is the choice
to pronounce "SQL" as "S-Q-L" or as "sequel" a product of regional
influence or professional influence? I think the author of the original
inquiry said that her engineer SMEs claim they always pronounce "SQL" as
"sequel." In my experience living and working in both Florida and
Minnesota I have always heard network engineer types pronounce the
initialism for "Structured Query Language" as the word "sequel." In
fact, when I first ran across the term and called it "S-Q-L" I was
severely corrected by engineer friends who told me I was saying it
wrong.
It's obvious that many people have run across groups that have a bias
toward one pronunciation or the other. Has anyone learned any empirical
or anecdotal evidence to determine what influence would lead a person
from a certain region or in a certain professional discipline prefer
"S-Q-L" or "sequel"?
