TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My method is to crank the screen resolution up high,
capture with SnagIt and capture to a .png file.
If you capture to a .jpg, you're throwing data away right away
because it's a lossy compression format. And if you edit and
resave it, you're throwing away more data each time you resave.
If you need to adjust the size of the image in your doc, I
would resize rather than muck with the resolution.
Another possible place you're losing significant quality is
when you generate the .pdf. The default settings are to compress
graphics using a lossy compression method. So if you haven't
already, turn those options down or off.
