"At any rate, I'm curious about two things. If you're a contractor, you
can't get disability insurance? Let's say you break both your legs or suffer
some debilitating disease that prevents you from working. Even if you've
paid into the system in the past, you can't go to the disability office and
take disability since you can no longer work?"
I'm not a contractor myself, but here's my understanding:
In the US, I believe that if you are disabled, you can get social security
disability payments from the government, depending on how much you've
already paid into the system, etc. If you are a contractor, you still have
to pay into the system (in fact, you usually pay more, as you must pay what
your employer would normally cover for full time work).
You *may* also be able to pay for some kind of private disability insurance
(like short-term disability).
