Kirk Turner solved his problem: <<The lawyer just called, and I used
Geoff's suggestion. I questioned the clause and found out that it WAS
boilerplate, just as Geoff guessed. The lawyer admitted that the
subject matter experts are the ones at risk, and I am just a humble
assembler and producer of their facts. Boy, I'm glad I don't have to
spring for the insurance! >>
Good to hear this worked out for you, but make sure that you get all
edits approved "in writing" (e-mail will suffice). That's the only way
to cover yourself against any errors that slip through the process. I
have another clause I insert in a contract which reads something like
the following: "Payment for any editing work that has been submitted by
the editor constitutes the client's confirmation that the edited
material has been reviewed and approved by the client, and that any
remaining errors are the client's responsibility."
