Thanks, Mike--

That IS informative. For the local face-to-face gatherings of common-interest folks, I found Meetup.com to be useful, though their membership model has changed that somewhat. We had a bloggers Meetup in the greater Silicon Valley that blossomed nicely and eventually abandoned the Meetup infrastructure for its own:

http://www.sfbaybloggers.com/

that uses other communication channels (southbay bloggers have a Yahoo! group).

Besides Meetup, there's also Upcoming.com (now a Yahoo! company). The chief value of entities like Meetup and Upcoming is the DISCOVERY and BIRTHING of the groups.

For those interested in virtual groups as a whole, see Danah Boyd's
http://www.danah.org/ and http://www.zephoria.org/thoughts/
