Companies seem to want to hire people who fit into neat "slots" like technical writer or programmer; they don't always grok hybrids.Thanks Monica for giving us a summary of that feedback. Interesting stuff. I also like your use of the expression "grok." something that I haven't heard since I lost my last copy of "Stranger in a Strange Land." I think both Geoff and Dick have valid arguments. You don't have to spend your entire career climbing the corporate ladder, especially if the rungs above your current position don't appeal to you, and don't try to make your next job just like your current job. Every position is different. How much or how little you make is part company resources and part individual sales. If you only sell yourself as a technical writer, then that's what you will get paid for. If you're a technical writer/programmer/manager/cartoonist, then you're worth more....okay, maybe not the cartoonist part.
