Got it :) So maybe I'll just study this book some more and ask questions here as needed.
Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I may look into the MS guide although I have a preference for all things open source :) The only things I'll be writing in the near future are for myself and possibly some open source projects just to get the hang of writing.
