Thanks for the tip, Dan. I wish I had seen this last week! This will be coming in very handy in future.

As for Bruce's suggestion, yes, I knew about the Tools>Outline Numbering feature. What I did not know was HOW IT WORKED because the online documentation is so minimal as to be invisible. I knew that OO and Word were not identical, but I had no idea how different their approaches to numbering were.

My problem was that, having defined a style as a header 2 or header 3 paragraph, and having defined the numbering style, those styles were not consistently applied throughout the document. I had to go through the entire 300 page document and apply each style by hand to the appropriate header. If I changed the paragraph style, the numbering style did not change, and vice versa. The paragraph numbering process should not be broken up like this. It's a nightmare.
