It's pretty widely agreed that the adhesives on labels can cause
problems for CD-Rs. Most experts seem to recommend labeling the disc
with the special markers intended just for CD-Rs. I've even known some
people who won't label the disc at all. They only label the case it's
stored inside.

I seem to recall (I'm doing that more and more lately... the ravages of
advancing age, I guess) some problems with the adhesive on the paper
labels
you can print and apply to CDs degrading the CDs and making them
unusable.
