I did a little marketing copy writing for a web-hosting company. That employed my tech writing skills and was a lot of fun. Another copywriting skill that is great for a tech writer is writing for the technology section of a newspaper. There are a lot of different things you can do...enjoy finding them!

Hello all,

I'm looking to develop more skills to make myself more flexible and marketable in order to find more freelance positions. How feasible is it for someone with eight years of IT technical writing (software and hardware manuals, database entity relationship references) to get into copywriting? Are there any good books out there you can recommend? I don't want to totally give up my IT writing, as I love doing that, but I simply want to be able to find more work.

Also, I'm thinking of slowly moving into web design and development. It seems that with my strong writing background, and my strong interest and academic background in programming and design, that web design and development would be the perfect career to make use of three of my main interests and abilities: writing, design, and programming. What are your opinions? I feel I just need to update my programming skills, and strengthen my design skills.

I already have been working through a few programming and web design books, but I'm thinking of purchasing the graphic design book "Graphic Design Solutions" by Robin Landa. Does anyone have any experience with this book? I'm trying to decide between the 2nd Edition ($15.00) and the Third Edition ($52.00). Does anyone know of any graphic design mailing list equivalent to TECHWR-L?
