I was utterly shocked to learn that Unemployement benefits aren't paid in order to benefit and help sustain the individual. Instead, they are paid on the basis that they benefit the economy as a whole, by providing a means for the general overall flow to continue. The viewpoint is to help sustain the foundation of economy. Not to sustain the affected individual.

You can add this to the fact that unemployment extensions are based on the unemployment rate which is not indicative of the number of people out of work. If you drop off the unemployment roles because your unemployment runs out, you are no longer counted as unemployment. Back when I lived in Oregon, a lot of people were using up their extensions and dropping off the unemployed roles causing the unemployment rate to actually go down, i.e., statistically less people were drawing unemployment ergo the economy must be improving. This was the same time that a Ph.D. in Astrophysics could get you a job as a greeter at WalMart...maybe.
