In my experience, Master Documents doesn't work very well. Actually, that
functionality is pretty grievously broken. See. e.g, http://addbalance.com/word/masterdocuments.htm for details. There are links
in that document that purport to have workarounds for when you absolutely,
positively have to use the feature, but I would use Extreme Caution.
As for merging two documents - I have used "Compare and Merge" with
relatively short documents without too much difficulty; I have no idea how
well it would work for a long document.
