Telecommutting continues to be frightening, "here be dragons" territory for
many US employers. For some reason, companies that think nothing of
offshoring and outsourcing entire departments go all into a tizzy at the
thought of an individual employee working remotely, even if it's within a
half hour's drive of the office.

I would say your first points of contact should be with the companies
you've worked in-office for previously. They at least know who you
are and what you're capable of. If you can manage to negotiate some
projects with them, once you've completed them successfully you may
be able to use them as references for future clients.
