I've used a few. As I recall, the Access book was pretty good, but quickly outgrown; the SQL one tried to bite off more than it could chew and wasn't much help. My overall impression is that you can sieve most of the useful information in these books out of them in a few concentrated hours, and then you have to go spend some more money -- after doing that a few times I decided it made more sense to start with a more comprehensive reference book if I really need to learn something.
In a number of contexts, the Dummies approach is perfectly sensible, but it's not appropriate for all.
