TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
We are a publication supplier to the equipment manufacturing industry.
We develop a majority of our documentation in FrameMaker. We have
converted several clients to FrameMaker, and each is very satisfied
with the product. A change in authoring tools is a big comittment.
Unless you have extensive experience with FrameMaker, you will probably
need help to make the move.
Here are some of the main benefits we see from using FrameMaker:
--single source control of commonly used information increases accuracy
and reduces development and maintenance costs
--WYSIWYG environment increases author efficiency
--multichannel delivery (print, SGML, XML, PDF) reduces processing
time and increases availability
--metadata in document allows interface with publishing systems
--information grandularity maximumizes content repurposing
--robust SDK facilitates development of powerful customized solutions
--consistent formatting and structure creates common corporate voice.
I am optimistic about the long-term viability of FrameMaker. Including
ourselves, there are many training providers and API developers out
there. The support network for FrameMaker is quite extensive.
I highly recommend a move to FrameMaker for your technical
documentation needs. FrameMaker is a great tool for people in our
business.

Robert Stoker

We are an equipment manufacturer using Quicksilver or Interleaf for
development of operator's manuals. I am trying to determine whether or
not we should move to FrameMaker.
What issues should I be aware of?
I'm looking for software with long-term stability and training and
support available.
