You define running headers and footers on your master pages. You embed
the chapter number in headers and footers by inserting the chapter
number variable <$chapnum>. It should reflect the current chapter
number.
This system variable is automatic; you don't need to define it. Its
format is controlled by the Document Numbering dialog box (Format >
Document > Numbering). As far as I know, you can't get around that. If
you want a number that represents the chapter's sequence in the book,
but in a format that's different from Document Numbering, you need to do
it through paragraph autonumbering.
Hope this helps.

Subject: Frame 7 variable
Hello,
Re: The chapter number variable
I have a FrameMaker 7.0 question
I'd like to use a number variable in my running header and footer, but
it has been appearing as a "1" throughout my body pages. Does the system
variable need to be defined another way, or do I need to be using BOOK
FORMAT to have it work properly?
Thanks for any help,
John
