I agree with John's approach. The best answer to this
kind of question is to avoid the problem altogether.
If you make it your standard to use wording that isn't
possessive, you never again have to worry about this
kind of choice. There may be some situations where a
possessive is necessary, but they are few and far
between. And with this wording, readers who pick nits
about grammar and spelling are less likely to give you
any problems.
