TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
It all depends on the tool chain you would like to switch to from Word. We
successfully use a single-source solution, namely Docbook XML. This allows
us to reuse information in different publications and automate building the
deliverables. I guess you produce PDFs as output files, as we do.
Docbook tool chain can be built based on open-source tools (an XML editor,
Docbook XSL stylesheets, and a converter to PDF, e.g. Apache FOP), so you do
not have to care much about the cost of the solution. Building the
deliverables can be easily automated, again using open-source tools (e.g.
Apache Ant). All you have to do is to invest some time to learn Docbook and
deploy the tool chain and automation.
