Actually, this is very common. Outside of home users and small businesses
it would be the norm for commercial software to be customised in some way,
either to 'do more stuff' or 'do stuff our way' or 'work with our other
stuff'. .... Thinking of better ways to handle this should be
seen as a challenge and an opportunity for us.

I agree with Stuart. It's too easy to say "NO!" But, saying no may not be in the best interest of our customers and without them we are all going to get pretty hungry. The key is to find a way that will allow customers (or sales, or marketing) to make changes (personalize) without destroying the integrity of the information. It's going to be a challenge, but aren't we in this business partly because it is so challenging.
