I think it misses the point to compare journalism or tech writing to
some Platonic ideal of "objectivity." The point is, does the writer
follow standardized practices to be as objective as humanly possible? I
wasted a couple of years getting a master's degree in journalism at a
top school, where I read many studies about the attempt to practice
objectivity, then went on to a continuing career in tech communications.
My take from both realms is that it is possible to be more objective
than the average person in your particular field, and that those who try
to do so produce writing that better serves the intended audience. This
is part of what sets a diligent journalist apart from a Rush or an Al
Franken, and a diligent technical writer apart from one who makes no
attempt to fight for quality.
