TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I don't think it is a question of source but of experience. Those of us who
freelance have had varying experiences with it, and in a competitive market
are perhaps more protective than we might be during more generous times.
The original poster is not one of the people who post frequently to the
list, so some reticence on our part may be due to the xenophobe factor. We
have a history of being less than kind at times to people who seem to drop
in just to ask for help -- thus the admonition to always "check the
archives".
No one is intent on withholding help; we just need a more sure foundation
upon which to base it, and that was not evident enough in the original
message.

Back when I was freelancing full-time, I would never give a competitor,
regardless of where they
lived, critical information about my clients.
