If I had separate Basic and Advanced manuals, here's
what I might try:
1. Open the Basic manual to a basic step.
2. Open the Advanced manual to a way to do that
particular step in a more advanced way.
3. Mentally rewrite the basic step to show how to do
the advanced thing.
No idea whether the Canon folks had anything like this
in mind, nor how much I'd learn doing it (I might end
up doing a bunch of flipping around anyway, depending
on how the Advanced manual is arranged). But it's
something I'd try.
