TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
I've been reading the responses and don't have any disagreements with
the comments, but did want to add one thing. The original poster
mentions recruiting a "senior" technical writer. I would be interested
in what others think qualifies someone to be labeled a senior writer.
I once worked with a writer who had the title of senior technical writer
but who had less than five years writing technical documentation, and
had a hard time writing clearly, concisely, or consistently. I was told
this person's background was in creative writing. They had no formal
training in technical writing, and I personally think that should be a
criterion for a "senior" writer.
I would think a senior technical writer would also need to have at least
5-7 years of direct technical writing experience. Admittedly, not all
technical writing experience comes with the title of technical writer.
At least mine didn't. I spent several years documenting policies and
procedures and writing instructional or training documents without the
glory of the title but I still consider it technical writing.
