Re: Telecommuting Job Search
Hello,
I am new to the technical writing field and am interested in finding a job as a telecommuter. I have been told by my peers that this list was a great way to ask questions about the field. I would appreciate any feedback from those of you who have experience as a telecommuter. Where do I begin?
Establish your chops. The single most important element in telecommuting is getting your employer or client to trust you. They need to feel certain that they aren't paying you to sleep in. For some supervisors it is very hard to trust workers who are not in sight. If you work onsite for a while, meeting deadlines and doing good work, building a relationship with your employer/client, then you have a good shot at telecommuting. When they know they don't have to look over your shoulder to ensure the work gets done, they are more amenable to persuasion.
Good luck.
Sarah
