My two cents:

For already created PDFs:

Never use the Reduce File Size command. Any JPG files are reduced to medium
quality. Windows system fonts such as Arial and Times New Roman are
embedded. Instead, use the PDF Optimizer command in Acrobat Pro so you can
select what you want to do.

For creating new PDFs, use the Edit Settings options in Distiller. Unlike
some recommendations in this thread, I would never recommend the "smallest
file size" option. No fonts are embed ed and graphics are downsampled to 72
dpi.

What settings you use depends on the intended use of the PDF. If it is meant
to be printed, then use the PDF/X Job Options.

Here's some details of what I'm using:

* Platform/OS: Windows NT

* Program/version of source doc: FrameMaker 7.2

* Software/version/process to create PDF: I create the PDF in FrameMaker

2. Save As ...
3. Save As Type (choose PDF)
4. I leave all the FramMaker default settings when making the PDF.

What platform and OS? What program and version is the source doc in?
What software, version, and process are you using to create the PDF?
What's the primary purpose of the PDF -- high-quality offset printing,
office-quality laser printing, online viewing, ...?

You'll have to give the list more specifics to get a specific answer.
