When I started in the computer business, most companies did not have
separate career tracks for ICs and managers. To get more influence,
money, and so forth, you had to become a manager. This is a really poor
way to develop management talent, especially in a business whose
"manufacturing plant" is highly-trained people who got into the business
to *do* stuff rather than *manage* stuff.
I have also seen the results: many, many ex-managers who continue on in
the same organization as ICs.
That's why most big companies now have dual tracks.
