If you'll take another look at the message that seems to be annoying
you, you'll notice that it is sent by the listowner, and that the first
paragraph explains the purpose of the message:
You received this message because you're a subscriber to TECHWR-L.
This ad posting is sent daily directly to all list members to help
underwrite the costs of the list (just as ads in a newspaper,
magazine, or journal underwrite the costs of those publications).

Commercial messages are prohibited from the main list. If you have a
commercial message you wish to transmit to the list members, you
must pay for that service, and your message will appear in that
once-a-day broadcast message from the listowner. Generally you'll
see specific messages repeating every day for a week, or two weeks,
or a month, depending on the term of the service that was purchased
by the poster.

As to the list itself, you must have something wron in your settings
because the list has been relatively active over the last week or two.

And regarding the subjects you wish to read more about, you should
spend some time in the list archive. Most of these subjects do come
up, but sporadically (a few times a year, say) rather than continuously,
with discussion usually petering out after a few days. Many of these
topics are well-tilled ground with little new to be said, and some of
the long-time list members (including me on my more curmudgeonly
days) are pretty tired of seeing the same comments about the same
issues over an over as new people join the list and ask common
questions without making any attempt to mine the archives.

I've been getting the same email each day (about jobs in Dayton, Ohio)
and
wondering if this is normal, even if it is to underwite the costs of the
list.

I'm not getting daily digests with everyone's posts and am curious as to
why this might be. Could it be everyone is too busy doing actual work
instead of posting, or they're "out of the office" or on retreat?

I expected to see heated (or at least vibrant) discussions of InDesign
and Framemaker,
how technical communication is changing, whether Information
Mapping is useful and how it differs from Structured Writing, how
badly TCs (Technical Communicators) are treated by software engineers,
the joys of XML and such.

Or, I could check (somehow) to see whether my digest settings are
correct.

Another topic:

Could someone suggest a good place to go after going through the
FrameMaker Classroom in a Book book. That is, what might be the
next logical level of learning, the next notch up into the heavenly
world of FM esotericism, or what other resources are available or

recommendable as a possible next level.

Additionally, what's the general word on Adobe InDesign, how is it
doing, where is it likely to go, are TCs getting increasing calls for
its use (in addition to Word and FM). I imagine this has been
covered at length on the list, so perhaps a few cut and pastes from
previous posts would help me. Or, I could try and access the
archives, once I figure it out.

Perhaps everyone is scrambling to get their resumes in order for
that job in Dayton, Ohio .

Regards

Bruce
