Thanks for the helpful responses, everyone. I'm getting "Word
Annoyances" and "Word Hacks" immediately. And, yes, Dan's solution is
exactly what I needed. (I misunderstood "inline" and assumed it somehow
always involved run-in text. If' I'd thought a little harder, I'd have
realized that wasn't very likely . . . although anything is possible
with Word.)
There's also another solution involving inserting a frame first, but
I'll try it another time.
I do get the idea that the floating picture options are beyond broken.
