Wendy wondered: <<Can anyone recommend a good conference or training
as an introduction to content management?>>
Have a look at Scott Abel's site: <www.thecontentwrangler.com>. Lots
of cool stuff there that I haven't had time to explore. Scott is also
a member of this list, so hopefully he'll chime in with more details.
In terms of conferences, have a look at the STC annual conference:
<http://stc.org/cfp/index.aspx> (I provide this link only to give you
dates and locations; the program managers are currently in the
process of reviewing all the proposals that were submitted, with
responses due by the end of the year. So I imagine you'll see a link
here or via the main page once the preliminary program has been
selected.)
In past years, the STC conference was targeted primarily at
beginners, but starting a couple years ago, we made a conscious
effort to include advanced content for more experienced
professionals; it seems to have worked, since we got rave reviews for
the conference I helped to manage, and I'm told (by an inside source)
that the trend is continuing: there will be continuing pressure to
cut down the number of sessions and thereby increase both the quality
of the presentations and the quality of the presenters.
I have also heard (but don't quote me on this just yet) that there
will be a strong content management component in the 2007 conference,
but we won't know whether this is true until all the proposals have
been sorted through. Some efforts will be made to recruit speakers,
but as in most other conferences, the final program also depends
strongly on who submits proposals.
