It worked fine for me as a keyboard macro, for custom-sizing one or more
columns.
1. Word 2003: Normal view
2. Tools: Macro: Record
3. Table: Insert: OK
4. Put the cursor in column 1.
5. Table: Select: Column
6. Table: Table Properties
7. Preferred Width: 1.5": OK
8. Tools: Macro: Stop Recording
Yes, it worked for me too, in Word 2000, following almost the same
steps as above (I included steps to turn off all borders, since it's
supposed to be used for layout, not as an actual table). When I played
back the macro thus recorded, without even looking at the code, let
alone editing it - it gave me an exactly correct table.
So, Holly, it seems you should have no problems demoing this as a
time-saving technique to your students. Are you, indeed, having
problems? If so, what?
