I live in Idyllwild, and knew most of the crew members who were killed this
past Thursday, so this is near and dear to my heart.
Thank you,
Julie Countryman
>From the Idyllwild Town Crier http://www.towncrier.com (Thursday's edition):
"Four firefighters, including Capt. Mark Loutzenhiser, lost their lives
battling the Esparanza Fire today. A fifth crew member is in very critical
condition with much of his body burned (and is not expected to live).
Loutzenhiser was taken to the Arrowhead Medical Center in criticalcondition
this morning and died this afternoon. He leaves a wife and five children.
Forest Service Engine crew 57 (from the Alandale Guard Station north of Pine
Cove) responded. But about 8 a.m., a sudden and intense burn over engulfed
the crew on San Gorgonio View Road in Twin Pines."
Mark was a core member of our community, and a local hero, coaching kids
sports teams, always helping out in community events, and had a big heart
and contagious smile. He coached my daughter's baseball team, the Twins,
guiding kids who had never played baseball before with patience, a lot of
heart, and a big smile. His lively twin boys Kyle and Seth had enough
enthusiasm and energy for the sport to carry a team in dead last place to
the world series, and that energy and
enthusiasm was tempered and refocused with kindness and love by their dad.
These five firefighters were employed by the USFS, which isn't known for
its high pay scale. If anyone feels moved to donate, even $5, please
contact the Riverside County has established a fund to help the families of
firefighters who were killed fighting the fire.
