Great lists of the different documents we create!

I cannot speak for anyone else, but what I "do" follows:

As a technical writer, I translate information from "-ese" (Engineering-ese,
Education-ese, Chemical-ese, Qualit-ese) into English so that it can be
understood by the rest of us (line workers, hassled managers, etc.).

Usually this translation takes the form of documents. Sometimes it is
charts or photo essays. Once in a while we stray into full training
programs and facilitation or even mediation until understanding is achieved.

Two very good skill acquisition tools for this job are crossword and jigsaw
puzzles. It's also helpful to have some solid background (3-5 years) in
Latin and German, along with a bit of work in Linguistics, Rhetoric, and
Mathematical Logic.
