In addition to all of the good advice you've gotten so far, pay attention to
the contrast ratio, which measures the difference between white and black.
1:400 is pretty low; 1:700 is relatively decent.

We've had a pair of 17" Samsung SyncMasters for 2 or 3 years now and are
very happy with them.
