There might be a better way, but this is what I had to do because the
expanded format is the default:
After creating the PDF, collapse the bookmarks and then make some small
change (and undo it if you don't actually need to change anything). Acrobat
doesn't recognize collapsing the bookmarks as a savable change, but if you
save some other change, it will leave the bookmarks as they were when you
saved the change. And people think Word is bizarre.

Subject: [Word to PDF]: Bookmarks pane
Hi All,
I have created a document in MS Word 2000 and converted to PDF using Adobe
PDFMaker 5.0 for Word. I wanted the bookmarks to be displayed and for that I
selected Bookmarks and Page radiobutton in Change Conversion Settings
-> Display -> Document Open Options. Then when I converted the word
-> document
to pdf, it did display the bookmark pane in the pdf file only that all the
bookmarks displayed were expanded. I want the bookmarks to be displayed in a
collapsed form.
I am not quite sure how to set this property. Can anyone please help?
