Pardon me for asking what may seem a rather inane question:
While the solution is technically excellent (as far as I can see), how
does it address the requirement of not using a popup?
In fact, that's what confused me in the first place. "Having a second
window open which I designed" - but which is not a popup window.

Oh, well - brain a little overheated at end of day... time to shut
down and get out of here. Maybe there's a simple answer to the poser
above, but I can't see it at the moment!

If it's ok for you to dig into HTML, just use:
<a href="link.html" target="other_window"> when you first click it it will
launch a new window just like target="_blank", however upon subsequent
click, if you retain the target="other_window" value, the links will open in
that window.

You could also use javascript for even finer control over this...
