Since I live in Seattle, and have frequently visited the Oregon Coast, I
want to add to this thread.
If you use maps.google.com, the resulting map from Federal Way,
Washington to Gold Beach, Oregon takes you on the route that the Kim
family chose.
Maps.yahoo.com and mapquest.com give a similar route -- over the
mountains.
Those of us who are natives (my husband's family came to Oregon in the
1850's; mine came to Washington in the 1890's), know that this is a
route that should only be driven in the summer -- even a spot of snow or
ice this time of year should discourage you from this "shortcut."
Instead, we drive to Longview, cross the bridge into Astoria, then drive
down the coast. This way, you don't cross the mountains at all -- the
Columbia River has done a great job of creating a sea-level pass through
the mountain range.
Presumably, James was a very intelligent person. He probably had an
online map as well as the Oregon road map. He may have even had a GPS
system. All of these maps led to his disastrous death.
I have nothing but great sympathy for the Kim family. I just wish at
least one person in Federal Way at his family Thanksgiving Dinner had
asked how he planned to travel to Oregon, and warned him that we lose
people in that same spot nearly every year. Because there was snow on
the ground already (unusual for the Puget Sound area in November), he
should have been aware of the problem, but he was not.
