I just replied to this note stating that he was arguing and using crude
language. It made for a very bad first impression.
I agree no relationship is perfect (have been married almost 30 years), but
in my mind a company lobby is no place to argue with someone on a cell
phone, especially when you are going on an interview and trying to impress
folks at the company.

Ed makes a good point. I have yet to see or hear of a relationship that
was perfected each and every day. My wife and I are wonderful together
and love each other dearly, but we also have "those days," when we are
on opposite sides of the rainbow. It's not often, but it happens and I
would have to say that this is true of most relationships. You may have
eliminated an excellent candidate because the receptionist perceived
that he/she was having a heated discussion with their partner, who told
the HR manager who interpreted the receptionists comments as the
candidate having family problems when in fact, it may have been one of
those days when the planets were lining up wrong for the couple. As
Edgar said, you never mentioned if the person was yelling, swearing, or
both. If that were true, then you were correct in tossing the resume
because that would be unprofessional.
