TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
On the average, I take 2 hours per page
if I am starting from scratch.
*****************
I do remember that many years ago there was an article in the STC Journal
suggesting that as a _rough_ average, the figure of 7 pages per day could be
expected from a good tech writer.
Some days I'll crank out 30 forms and 22 pages of text. Other days I'm
lucky to nail down one form (with ten pounds of information crammed into a
five pound bag -- half of the time goes into convincing the users to let me
use the previously blank reverse side of the paper), along with a one-page
policy or process map (after three meetings with the stakeholders on all
three shifts).
The variables are always going to win.
