The more or less standard consulting form I have seen in most 1099
arrangements over the past 10 years or so usually specify that both
client and contractor are to provide a specified period of notice
(usually two weeks or one month) in the event of unplanned end of
contract, or pay an equivalent amount based on the contract rate in
lieu, with the caveat that either may be waived by mutual agreement.
As I posted previously, in at-will states (43 of 50, last time I
checked)
provisions such as this are generally unenforceable on W2 employees.
What I did was pretty much what John suggested. For the first, I took a
cue
from an insurance policy, crossed out "change my mind", and wrote
~"unforeseen circumstances including, but not limited to, acts of God,
death
in the family, childbirth, etc.".
For the second, I simply copied what I've seen on every contract that
I've
ever signed: "You reserve the right to quit this position without
notice
and the employer reserves the right to dismiss you without notice".
