In computer user interfaces, a dashboard is a window that provides
contextual access to commonly used tools in a software program. The
metaphor is the collection of gauges on a car or plane dashboard. A
dashboard report is essentially a high-level summary report of key
points/indicators that can be viewed as charts, graphs, columns of data
- however, it is configured to do so - "on the fly" if you will. You
typically click a single point on the interface that requests the
generation of the report (the report factors/variables are pre-set) and
voila, the report appears in the window, or sometimes, the report is set
to generate automatically - the user doesn't even have to request to
generate the report.

Subject: Buzzword alert?: Dashboard reports
I was just introduced to the term 'dashboard report' today. When I look
it up in Google, I get lots of software-selling type sites, but no
really good general idea of what the term encompasses. They seem to be
just spiffed-up multiple-comparison graphic data summaries.
Am I missing something? is there a good general discussion of the idea
somewhere?
