Candis,
I beg to differ. I speak several languages, but learned more grammar
when I taught English at the U.S. Naval Academy's Prep School. Of
course, I was an Army officer, so the midshipmen didn't expect much. .

Subject: Grammar Terms (Was: The 'user' in User Manual)
I'm another who writes grammatically, but seldom knows which grammar
terms mean what. I struggled in a college Hebrew class because the
professor, an Israeli linguist, used grammar and linguistic terms for
everything and I didn't know what they meant. I remember specifically an
aha moment when I connected the meaning of the word "imperative" with
one of the verb tenses.
Things got better after that.
I edit a lot of engineering writing -- my frustration is seldom with
grammar, but with the style. They use passive voice incessantly, but
grammatically. And don't get me started about deadwood, jargon, and
business-speak.
2 cents (what the heck, it's cheap)
